Conjunctions

 

Las llamadas conjunctions o conjunciones, son palabras que funcionan como unión entre diferentes elementos o clausulas en una sentencia. Se las utilizan para conectar frases, cláusulas y oraciones entre sí y pueden ubicarse tanto al principio de la oración: conjunction + sentencia_1 + sentencia_2 como entre dos sentencias o elementos:  sentencia_1 + conjunction + sentencia_2.

Ejemplos:

    If your family believes a myth, you’re likely to believe it too.

   There are many sustainability myths, and we need to unravel them. 

Las conjunciones se utillizan para expresar distintos tipos de relaciones entre las sentencias o frases, algunas de las cuales se detallan a continuación:

  • Causa y Efecto:
    • If: si
      • If we use our resources wisely, we can ensure their availability for future generations.
    • So: así que
      • We need to reduce our carbon footprint, so we can help mitigate climate change.
    • Because: porque
      • Because it was raining, I decided not to go to the beach.
      • We are going to be late to the party because the traffic is bad.
    • Unless: a menos que
      • Unless the party is boring, we will have fun
    • In order to: con el fin de
      • Jane threw a party in order to celebrate her birthday.
  • Contraste:
    • But: pero
      • I not only passed the driving test but also got the perfect score 
    • Although: aunque
      • We arrived at the party on time although the traffic was bad
    • Thoughaunque
      • We arrived at the party on time though the traffic was bad
    • While: mientras
      • We arrived at the party on time while Michael and Julie were late
    • Even though: a pesar de
      • We arrived at the party on time even though the traffic was bad
  • Adición:
    • And:
      • Va entre dos clausulas y usa una comma para separalas
      • Next weekend we will go to the park and to the mall 
  • Tiempo:
    • After: después
      • We cleared up the mess after they were gone.
    • Before: antes
      • Before leaving the party, everyone sang happy birthday and ate a slice of cake
    • As soon as: tan pronto como
      • Everyone started dancing as soon as Jane put the music on
    • By the time: para el momento que
      • Everything will be ready by the time you get home
    • Until: hasta
      • I was happy until you came and ruined everything
    • Since: desde
      • I was afraid of clowns since I was a child
      • I feel better since I have finished my therapy
