Estructura

Afirmativa

Sujeto + verbo auxiliar (to be) + verbo+ing.

Ejemplos:

• Your dog was playing with its toys when I arrived
• I was dancing all night long
• He was having dinner with his boss

Negativa

Sujeto + verbo auxiliar (to be) + “not” + verbo+ing.      

Ejemplos:

• I was not studying Physics at that time.
• The student wasn’t paying attention. 
• We weren’t playing with your ball

Interrogativa

Verbo auxiliar (to be) + sujeto + verbo+ing?

Ejemplos:

• Was it raining when you left?
• Were you eating candies when I entered the room?
• Weren’t you listening to the teacher? 

Usos

Este tiempo verbal se lo usa para:

1. Acciones que se llevan a cabo en un momento determinado del pasado
• Jose called while I was watching the news.
2. Uso narrativo: para situar el escenario al comienzo de una historia
• It was getting dark, and I was walking to the pub when ..
